Biography
Hi.
My name is J. R. Cobern, Jr....or Rusty to my friends and clients. I am 48
years old and my wife, Pam, and I have three wonderful children. We’ve
lived in Austin since we moved here from San Antonio in 1986.
Although
we’ve lived in two fairly large towns for the past 26 years, I still consider
myself a “country boy”. I grew up in the small West Texas town of Paint
Rock (population 196), hunting and fishing along the Concho River,
playing 6-man football, and working on local farms and ranches. Being
the son of two school teachers, education was very important to me. In
1980, after being named a national merit scholar finalist, I graduated first
in my small, but talented high school class. (19 out of the 21 seniors went
on to graduate from college.) After high school, I attended Texas State
University (then known as SWT), in San Marcos, TX on a partial football
scholarship. After a couple of seasons, I left the football team (right
before they won back-to-back National Championships) and started working
full-time. I graduated from Texas State University in 1983 with degrees
in accounting and finance. I am a Certified Public Accountant, licensed by
the State of Texas since September 1987.
Like most working
parents, Pam and I don’t have much spare time; however, we make time for our
Church activities as well as the kids’ school and sports functions. When we
have time, we enjoy hunting, fishing, and boating. We both love working
with children and I’ve coached youth sports for the past 15 years. My wife,
Pam, is the Executive Director of Austin LifeCare. Pam and I are both active members of the
Westover Hills Church of Christ.
